Understanding the Dangers Facing Our Society | By Dr. Edmond Melhem
Our society is facing major challenges that threaten its unity and future. While external dangers, like committing oppression and genocide in Palestine, capture attention, the most significant threats come from within. These include divisions, conflicts, and misunderstandings between our own people—a situation that can be described as “society fighting against itself.”
When we fail to work together, we cause harm and sorrow to ourselves. This internal conflict deepens divides and hostility between groups based on religion, ethnicity, or tribal identity. Instead of building a stronger community, these divisions create mistrust and make life more difficult for everyone. If left unchecked, this will lead to greater instability and suffering.
The Problems We Face
Our society’s struggles can be seen all around us:
• Many people feel hopeless and live in misery, fear and despair.
• Forced displacement and resettlement plans as a result of destructive and annihilating wars in which our society engages from time to time.
• Young people and intellectuals are leaving their homes for better opportunities elsewhere.
• Corruption is widespread causing great suffering and losses. It permeates our social, economic and political structures.
• Communities are divided along sectarian or political lines, causing endless arguments and hostility instead of cooperation.
This division keeps people trapped in small, isolated groups focused on their own interests rather than the greater good. True unity, justice, and equality are missing. Instead, mistrust and selfishness take over.
How Our Society Can Heal
These problems don’t just hurt individuals—they weaken our whole society. When communities fight amongst themselves, it becomes easier for outside forces to exploit us. Corrupt systems and narrow loyalties are tools used by our enemies to divide and control us.
We need to change this. Narrow loyalties—whether based on religion, ethnicity, or politics—hold us back. They maintain our divisions, make us vulnerable to corruption, and prevent progress. To fix this, we must focus on what unites us: our shared identity, values, and goals as members of one society.
The Path Forward
Fixing these problems will take effort from all of us. It starts with understanding that:
• A healthy society values everyone equally, no matter their background.
• We must promote justice, fairness, and the common good over selfish interests.
• People need to feel they belong to something bigger—a national community, not just a sect or tribal group.
This means rejecting division and working together as one united society. We must build a culture of openness, trust, and cooperation. By taking this path, we will eliminate the roots of conflict and lay the foundation for a better future.
A Call to Action
It falls upon each of us to take responsibility for reviving and strengthening our society. This shared commitment demands that we foster unity, promote shared values, and work together for the greater good. By achieving solidarity and supporting one another, we can create a community that thrives on cooperation and mutual respect.
We must engage in a national renaissance—a movement dedicated to transforming our nation from a state of weakness and conflict to one of strength and harmony. This effort requires promoting justice, equality, and virtues that build trust and compassion. When we invest in the well-being of society, we secure a better future for everyone.
