US Sanctions: Damascus Response to Washington’s Conditions and IMF and Saudi Statements on Support
Syria has responded in writing to Washington’s conditions for lifting US sanctions, confirming that it has implemented most of them, but some conditions require mutual agreements with Washington.
According to a Reuters report, the United States handed Syria a list of eight conditions last month, including the destruction of remaining chemical weapons and ensuring that foreigners do not hold leadership positions in the government.
Syria emphasized its need for sanctions relief to expedite the recovery of its war-torn economy, which has been under the strain of 14 years of war and Western sanctions, noting that the partial exemption issued by Washington in January had limited effect.
Regarding reconstruction support, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and Saudi Finance Minister Mohammed Al-Jadaan affirmed the international community’s commitment to providing support to Syria.
Georgieva announced in a press conference after the spring meetings of the International Monetary and Financial Committee in Washington that a coordination meeting was held in Saudi Arabia to form an international working group to support Syria.
Georgieva outlined the priorities, including rebuilding a reliable data system, enhancing the capabilities of the Syrian Central Bank, and developing tax policies for revenue collection.
