Washington announces opposition to any Turkish attack on Syria

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced his country’s opposition to any Turkish military attack on northern Syria, and warned his NATO ally Ankara that it would “jeopardize the region.”

Blinken asked Ankara to abide by the 2019 ceasefire agreement, after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan renewed his threats to “clear” two northern Syrian cities of Kurdish fighters.

Blinken said during a joint press conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg that “our great concern is that any new attack would undermine regional stability and provide malicious actors with the potential to exploit instability.” He added, “It’s something we oppose.”

“We don’t want to see anything jeopardizing our efforts to keep ISIL in the box where we were locked,” Blinken said.
