Washington Plans to Adopt ‘Arabian Gulf’ Name Instead of ‘Persian Gulf’, Tehran Responds
The Associated Press reported, citing U.S. officials, that President Donald Trump intends to formally adopt the term “Arabian Gulf” instead of “Persian Gulf” during his upcoming visit to the Middle East.
In response, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denounced the move as politically motivated, hostile, and lacking legitimacy. In a post on Platform X on Wednesday, he stressed that the name “Persian Gulf” has deep historical roots, is recognized by all international organizations and global maps, and was used in official correspondence by regional leaders up until the late 1960s.
Araghchi noted that Iran has never objected to names like the Gulf of Oman, Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, or Red Sea, emphasizing that geographic names do not imply ownership but rather reflect shared human heritage. He warned that politically driven attempts to alter the historic name of the Persian Gulf reflect hostility toward Iran and should be firmly condemned, calling them offensive to all Iranians.
He expressed hope that what he described as “ridiculous rumors” were merely disinformation campaigns meant to provoke Iranians worldwide. Any such short-sighted move, he said, would lack legal or geographic validity and only stir widespread resentment among Iranians globally.
