Why Does Russia Reject the Vatican as a Venue for Peace Talks with Ukraine?
According to a report by Reuters, citing three high-level Russian sources, Russia does not view the Vatican as an appropriate or serious venue to host peace negotiations with Ukraine. The sources attributed Moscow’s stance to several geopolitical and religious factors, notably the Vatican’s status as the seat of the Catholic Church and its location within Italy—a NATO and European Union member state that supports Ukraine in the ongoing conflict.
Travel Restrictions to the Vatican
The sources explained that most Russian officials face significant travel limitations due to Western restrictions and EU sanctions imposed since the start of the war in February 2022. Additionally, direct flights between Moscow and Rome have been suspended, further complicating access to the Vatican.
A source familiar with Kremlin thinking stated, “The Vatican is not seen in Russia as a serious power capable of mediating such a complex conflict,” noting that both Russia and Ukraine are predominantly Eastern Orthodox countries, while the Vatican represents Catholicism.
Trump’s Suggestion and the Vatican’s Role
The idea of hosting talks at the Vatican was reportedly suggested by former U.S. President Donald Trump during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump proposed that Pope Leo XIV—the first American-born pontiff—could facilitate the peace negotiations aimed at ending what he described as a bloody war.
Russia’s Preferred Alternatives for Peace Talks
Last week, the Kremlin confirmed that no decision had been made regarding this initiative. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov described the Vatican option as “somewhat inappropriate,” emphasizing Russia’s preference for more neutral locations such as Turkey and the Gulf states.
The Russian sources highlighted these countries’ neutral positioning and credibility in mediation. President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly praised both Turkey and the Gulf states for their efforts to help resolve the conflict.
“The Worst Option”
In a sardonic remark, one Russian official stated that “the only place worse than the Vatican would be The Hague”—referring to the seat of the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant against Putin. The Kremlin has dismissed the warrant as “biased and legally irrelevant,” noting that Russia is not a signatory to the Rome Statute and denying any war crimes in Ukraine.
