Al Ahly signs Ahmed Sayed Zizo on a free transfer from rivals Zamalek
On Friday, June 6, 2025, Al Ahly officially announced the signing of Ahmed Sayed Zizo, formerly of Zamalek, on a free transfer. The contract extends for four seasons following the expiration of the player’s deal with his former club at the end of the 2024–2025 football season.

Al Ahly completed the registration process for Zizo in the domestic squad list after receiving the necessary approvals from the Giza Football Association (affiliated with Zamalek) and the Cairo Football Association (affiliated with Al Ahly). He was also added to the club’s squad for the FIFA Club World Cup. This move utilized the special registration window from June 1 to 10, which remained active despite coinciding with the Eid al-Adha holiday.

According to sources within the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), Zizo’s name was entered into the FIFA Transfer Matching System (TMS) after completing all related procedures. The same sources confirmed that EFA staff from the player registration department were directed to work during the official holiday to ensure the timely registration of Zizo, given that Al Ahly is the sole Egyptian club participating in this year’s Club World Cup.
Zamalek had previously submitted a request to extend the 2024–2025 season until June 12, in an effort to legally bind Zizo’s contract to that date and potentially block the transfer to Al Ahly. However, the EFA rejected the request, confirming that the player’s contract had officially ended following the conclusion of the Egypt Cup final held the previous evening. In that match, Zamalek secured the title with an 8–7 penalty shootout win over Pyramids FC.

Ahmed Sayed Zizo has been one of Zamalek and Egypt’s standout players in recent years. Since joining Zamalek in January 2019, he played 260 matches, scoring 84 goals and providing 71 assists. His honors include two Egyptian Premier League titles, two Egypt Cup titles, two CAF Confederation Cup titles, one Egyptian Super Cup, and two CAF Super Cups. Zizo is known for his strong connection with the Zamalek fan base, making his transfer to Al Ahly a topic of significant public interest. The announcement video shared by Al Ahly quickly amassed over 7 million views, fueling intense debate among supporters of both clubs.
Al Ahly is set to begin its pre-season training camp for the FIFA Club World Cup with a friendly match against Mexico’s Pachuca this Sunday, before facing Inter Miami in the tournament opener. The club has been drawn into Group A alongside Inter Miami, FC Porto of Portugal, and Palmeiras of Brazil.
This will be Al Ahly’s 10th appearance at the FIFA Club World Cup, having previously participated in nine editions and won the bronze medal four times—in 2006, 2020, 2021, and 2023.
