A human tragedy in Iraqi Kurdistan

As a result of not paying employees’ salaries for several months with the worsening economic crisis in the country, protests erupted in Sulaymaniyah Governorate in Iraqi Kurdistan, and the Kurdistan authorities met with violent repression.

The High Commission for Human Rights in Iraq, commented on the violent incidents that accompanied the protests, and invited the federal government in Baghdad, the Kurdistan Regional Government.

In a statement, the Commission said: “We are extremely sorry for the events that took place in Sulaymaniyah governorate, which came as a result of the demonstrations demanding late salaries for employees.”

She added, “Salaries are a constitutional right, and therefore any delay in their disbursement will negatively affect the lives of citizens and their humanitarian requirements,” noting that “the issue of salaries is a humanitarian issue.”

Calling on the federal government and the regional government to “sit down at an urgent dialogue table to find solutions to deal with the payment of late salaries.”

The statement concluded by saying: “The Human Rights Commission in Iraq expresses its refusal to prevent peaceful demonstrations in southern Kurdistan, and asks the demonstrators to maintain peaceful demonstrations and protect public and private funds.”
