The security repercussions continued in the Syrian capital, Damascus, as a source from the Syrian Ministry of Interior reported this evening that the number of casualties from the explosion that occurred inside Mar Elias Church in the Douilaa district has risen to 19, in addition to dozens of injuries.

The source, as quoted by Al Jazeera, stated that investigations are still underway to determine the nature of the explosion and the party responsible, amid a state of heightened security in the surrounding area.

The official news agency SANA had previously confirmed that the explosion took place in the church courtyard during a civilian gathering, causing panic in the adjacent residential neighborhood.

Initial images show significant damage to the church entrance and its windows, while emergency and civil defense teams rushed to the scene immediately after the incident.
