Caribbean flights affected by US airspace closure over Puerto Rico

US escalation against Venezuela has caused widespread disruptions in air travel across the Caribbean, particularly following the closure of airspace over Puerto Rico and the eastern Caribbean. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced a temporary airspace closure due to security developments related to military activity in Venezuela.

Puerto Rico’s main airport, Luis Muñoz Marín International, reported the cancellation or suspension of most flights operated by US carriers arriving or departing. The airport said in a statement that the measures were taken “based on FAA instructions to ensure safe air travel amid evolving security conditions.”

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines announced the cancellation of five flights scheduled for Saturday to Caribbean destinations including Curaçao, Bonaire, Sint Maarten, and Bridgetown, affecting approximately 2,600 passengers. The airline stated that it is closely monitoring the situation and will make further decisions regarding upcoming flights to Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire, Sint Maarten, Port of Spain, Georgetown, and Bridgetown.

Meanwhile, Air France resumed its flights to the Antilles on Saturday afternoon after a temporary suspension. European media cited the airline as saying it decided to restart flights to Sint Maarten, Pointe-à-Pitre, and Fort-de-France after monitoring developments on the ground.
