Egyptian-Indonesian Relations: A Model for Strategic Cooperation Between the Global South to Enhance Stability and Development
On Saturday, April 12, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi held official talks with Indonesian President Joko Widodo during his first official visit to Cairo since assuming office in October 2024. The discussions aimed to strengthen the long-standing Egyptian-Indonesian relations, which have spanned more than seven decades.
The two leaders confirmed during the meeting their agreement to elevate the Egyptian-Indonesian relations to the level of a strategic partnership, reflecting new horizons for comprehensive cooperation across various fields.
Defense and Economic Cooperation
The two presidents discussed ways to enhance defense cooperation, particularly in the areas of training, expertise exchange, and capacity building, amid escalating regional and global challenges. They emphasized the importance of security coordination to combat terrorism and secure vital maritime passages.
The discussions also explored mechanisms for activating the strategic partnership between the two countries, especially in sectors such as industry, trade, investment, communications, information technology, food security, and energy. The focus was on strengthening ties between business institutions to serve sustainable development and enhance economic integration between Egypt and Indonesia.
Palestinian Issue
The talks also touched upon the situation in Gaza, with President el-Sisi reviewing Egypt’s ongoing efforts to achieve a ceasefire and deliver humanitarian aid. Both leaders stressed the need for Gaza’s reconstruction without displacing its residents and advancing toward a two-state solution based on international legitimacy and the borders of 1967, with the assurance that East Jerusalem will be the capital of the Palestinian state.
A Renewed Historical Partnership Within the “South-South” Framework
Egypt and Indonesia have had historical relations since 1947, and both are prominent supporters of the South-South cooperation model, due to their political and economic weight. Recently, the relationship has seen a growth in trade exchange, which reached $1.4 billion in 2023, accompanied by the signing of agreements in the fields of agriculture, health, and education.
On the defense front, the two countries have signed several memorandums of understanding since 2018 to exchange counterterrorism expertise and military training, benefiting from Egypt’s strategic location on the Suez Canal and Indonesia’s position on the vital Strait of Malacca.
President Widodo’s visit to Cairo reflects the two countries’ desire to deepen political, economic, and defense cooperation, especially in light of the accelerating global and regional crises, including the Gaza conflict and disruptions in global supply chains. The visit underscores that Egypt and Indonesia are strategic partners committed to supporting regional stability and fostering mutual development.
