The Greenland Conflict: Trump Calls for NATO Support, Paris Launches First European Move

The Greenland Conflict: Trump Links U.S. Control to the Golden Dome Project as Paris Acts Diplomatically

U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States needs Greenland for national security reasons, stressing that the island represents a vital component of the Golden Dome project that Washington is working to develop.

Trump stated that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) should lead efforts to ensure U.S. control over Greenland, warning of potential attempts by Russia or China to assert influence over the island.

He added that U.S. military power is the primary guarantor of NATO’s effectiveness and deterrence, noting that any lesser role would be insufficient, and that U.S. control of Greenland would significantly enhance the alliance’s strength and effectiveness.

Barrot Announces First European Diplomatic Move

France, for its part, announced on Wednesday that it will open a consulate in Greenland on February 6, underscoring the importance of respecting the island’s self-governance and rejecting any attempt to apply pressure or assert control over it. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said that targeting or pressuring another NATO member would be illogical and contrary to U.S. interests.

In an official response, authorities in Denmark and Greenland warned against any attempt to seize control of the island, reaffirming their commitment to preserving its territorial integrity and rejecting any external interference. This comes amid continued statements by Trump expressing his desire for the United States to acquire Greenland, citing its strategic importance to U.S. national security.
