One in Six People Globally Has Infertility… Examinations and Causes

17.6% of People Suffer from Infertility, According to Sechenov Russian University Study

Scientists from Sechenov University stated that one in six people worldwide is considered to have infertility, representing approximately 17.6% of the global population.

Dmitry Korolyov, a urologist and andrologist and associate professor at the Institute of Urology and Human Reproductive Health at the university, presented the data on the occasion of World Reproductive Health Day on February 12.

Men’s Contribution to Infertility and Its Causes

Korolyov noted that men account for about 50% of infertility cases. The most common issues include genetic abnormalities, varicocele, obesity, and related conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. He added that these factors can directly affect male reproductive capacity.

Recommended Examinations After Age 40

Korolyov advised men over 40 to undergo tests for total free testosterone levels, along with glucose and glycated hemoglobin measurements, to monitor their sexual and reproductive health. He also recommended checking thyroid hormones and tumor markers to assess key physiological functions.

Digital Rectal Examination and Importance of Regular Check-Ups

The doctor added that a digital rectal exam by a urologist is essential for the early detection of benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate cancer with high accuracy. He emphasized that these regular examinations help evaluate reproductive health and capacity in men after the age of 40.
