Iraqi Defense Minister Confirms Army Readiness During Inspection of the Iraqi-Syrian Border

Iraqi Defense Minister Thabet Al-Abbasi confirmed that the armed forces have full control over the border with Syria to prevent any threats from extending into Iraq, including movements by Islamic State (ISIS) elements fleeing Syria. The minister emphasized close monitoring of regional developments to ensure the country’s security and stability.

This statement coincided with a field visit by Iraqi Chief of Staff, General Abdel Amir Rashid Yarallah, to the border strip, where he inspected military units and reviewed the latest security updates alongside a high-ranking military delegation. Al-Abbasi affirmed that the army is fully prepared to secure every inch of Iraq’s borders and that any threat will be addressed immediately.

In a related context, Iraqi Interior Minister Abdul Amir Al-Shammari warned that any unauthorized approach to the border will be met with immediate fire, amid reports of ISIS members escaping from prisons in northeastern Syria under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), raising concerns about the group attempting to reorganize and expand across the border.
