Libya: UN Calls for De-escalation as Greater Tripoli Threatens with Civil Disobedience

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has renewed its call for an immediate halt to military escalation in the capital, Tripoli, expressing concern over ongoing tensions and armed movements within residential areas.

The mission emphasized that any new confrontation could endanger civilian security and lives, stressing that the protection of residents and infrastructure must remain an absolute priority. UNSMIL also urged the continuation of negotiations under the supervision of the Presidential Council.

Greater Tripoli: Threat of Civil Disobedience

In parallel, residents of Greater Tripoli, including the districts of Tajura and Zawiya, issued a statement warning the Government of National Unity, headed by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, about the consequences of continued military deployments in residential neighborhoods. The statement demanded the withdrawal of forces within 24 hours and held the international community and the UN Security Council fully responsible for any escalation or bloodshed in Libya.

The residents indicated that comprehensive civil disobedience in Libya would follow if demands were not met, threatening to turn areas into “armed security zones.” The statement also urged citizens to secure their neighborhoods and families, and called on mosque leaders to raise the call to prayer if the deadline passed without government response.
