Liverpool FC, the Premier League champions, announced on Friday the official signing of German midfielder Florian Wirtz, 22, from Bayer Leverkusen on a five‑year contract, following the successful completion of his medical examination.

According to media reports, the deal is worth £100 million ($134.64 million), with an additional £16 million in potential bonuses, making Wirtz the most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history. The transfer surpasses the club’s previous record of £75 million for Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk in 2017.

With this agreement, Wirtz becomes the most expensive signing in the history of both the Premier League and the Bundesliga, and the third most costly in the history of football, after Kylian Mbappé and Neymar Jr.

Wirtz joins the list of Premier League signings that have exceeded £100 million, including Enzo Fernández, Moisés Caicedo, Declan Rice, and Jack Grealish.

“I am very proud. At long last, the agreement has been finalized, and I am very excited to start this new chapter. It was always in my thoughts to experience something new, to move from the Bundesliga to the Premier League,” said Wirtz in a statement.

Wirtz featured in 197 matches for Bayer Leverkusen after joining from FC Köln in 2020, recording 57 goals and 65 assists. In the 2023–2024 season, he contributed 16 goals and 15 assists, helping the team secure both the Bundesliga and the DFB‑Pokal titles without a single defeat. He also became the only player in Bundesliga history to record at least 10 goals and 10 assists in each of the last two seasons.

Wirtz has earned 31 caps for the German national team since making his debut in 2021. He is regarded as one of the most promising talents in European football and had been linked with moves to Bayern Munich and Manchester City before Liverpool secured his signature.
