Developments in Nuclear Negotiations Between Washington and Tehran: Grossi Says “No Deal Yet”

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, stated on Wednesday, May 28, that the ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Washington over Iran’s nuclear program “have not yet been concluded.” He emphasized that near-daily discussions are continuing with both Iranian and American officials.

Grossi noted that one of his deputies, Massimo Aparo—the head of the IAEA’s Department of Safeguards—is currently in Tehran. Aparo’s department is responsible for deploying inspectors to monitor Iran’s nuclear program, which recently saw uranium enrichment levels reach 60% purity, a technical step close to weapons-grade levels (90%).

Speaking at a press conference at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Grossi underlined that the continued meetings reflect a mutual willingness to reach an agreement, although the outcome remains uncertain. He also highlighted that five rounds of negotiations have already been held between Iran and the United States, facilitated by Oman and Italy, with the location of the sixth round yet to be determined.
