Resignations of senior officials in Ukraine

The resignation of the Ukrainian deputy defense minister responsible for logistics, hours after the resignation of the deputy chief of staff of the Ukrainian presidential office, against the background of a series of scandals that rocked Kyiv and the Ukrainian media.

The Defense of Ukraine confirmed that the Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Vyacheslav Shapovalov, who is responsible for the logistics of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, resigned after the procurement scandal.

The statement also said that “Vyacheslav Shapovalov… requested his expulsion so as not to pose a threat to the stable supplies of the Ukrainian armed forces as a result of a campaign of accusations related to the purchase of food services.”

The statement added that Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov agreed to his deputy’s request and directed a proposal to the government to do so.

The resignation of the Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defense comes hours after the resignation of the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Office of Ukraine, Kyrylo Tymoshenko.

The Ukrainian President confirmed the acceptance of Tymoshenko’s resignation, in a statement that said, “Tymoshenko dismissed Kirillo Vladlenovich from the post of Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine in accordance with the submitted request.”

Ukrainian media accuses the Ministry of Defense of fraud by concluding an agreement to provide catering services to military units stationed in Zhitomir, Kiev, Poltava, Sumy, Cherkassy and Chernihiv regions.

According to media sources, the value of the deal is more than 13 billion hryvnia (more than 350 million dollars). Reports indicated that the Ministry of Defense buys products two to three times more expensive than what can be bought in retail stores in Kyiv.

In response, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense said that this information was published with “indications of intentional manipulation and disinformation”. The Ukrainian Defense Minister explained that the inflated prices of products resulted from a technical error.

According to Ukrainian sources, Alexei Simonenko resigned from the position of Deputy Prosecutor General in the country, in connection with a scandal related to his travel to Spain for 10 days, in a car owned by a company belonging to the wife of businessman Grigory Kozlovsky.
