Sergey Vershinin: Russian Bases in Syria Continue Cooperation with Damascus

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin confirmed that Russian bases in Syria remain operational, contributing to stability in Syria and the wider region.

Vershinin explained that the 2017 Russia-Syria agreement, granting Russia the right to use the Hmeimim Air Base and the Tartus naval facility for 49 years, remains in effect.

He added that the bases can also facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria through various channels. Vershinin emphasized that military and technical cooperation with Damascus continues within the framework of regional security and stability, without being hindered by sanctions.

The status of the Russian bases came under scrutiny following the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024. Subsequent statements from Russia and Syria confirmed the continuation of military and technical cooperation, respecting prior agreements while redefining relations to maintain Syrian state sovereignty. Syrian Interim President Ahmad Al-Shar visited Moscow, and Defense Minister Marhaf Abu Qasra noted that Damascus remains open to the ongoing Russian military presence in the country.
