Settling in Libya: State authorities warn of illegal migration risks to Europe
Libya’s Interior Minister of the Government of National Unity, Emad Al-Trabelsi, warned of concerning indicators regarding illegal migration in Libya, noting that about 70% of recently deported migrants are families, reinforcing the possibility of attempts at settling in Libya.
He added that the number of migrants in the country exceeds three million, including nationals from Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Sudan, and other countries, creating pressures on Libya, neighboring states, and Europe.
Al-Trabelsi stated that the Interior Ministry launched the national program for deporting irregular migrants in July and began the first phase with organized flights coordinated with embassies, deporting thousands of individuals in October alone, aiming to regulate migration and reduce the risks associated with their presence in the country.
The minister called on the African Union to play a more active role in ensuring the coordinated and safe return of its nationals. He also noted Libya’s readiness to cooperate with the European Union to support the national deportation program, within a framework that protects European coasts, preserves Libyan sovereignty, and ensures operations are carried out efficiently and systematically.
