Somaliland: Somali Urgent Call for Arab League Action to Discuss Developments
The Somali Ambassador to Cairo and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Ali Abdi Awari, announced his country’s firm rejection of Israel’s recognition of the separatist Somaliland region, calling for urgent action by the Arab League.
The ambassador stated that remarks by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the recognition of the so-called “Republic of Somaliland” and the establishment of full diplomatic relations represent a clear violation of the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia and the unity of its territory. He called for an emergency meeting of the Arab League Council to discuss the implications of these decisions, emphasizing that any recognition of the region as an independent entity is invalid and legally null.
Trump’s Remarks
Responding to Israel’s actions on the matter, former U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States does not intend to recognize the independence of Somaliland. In a phone interview with *The Washington Post* from his private golf course, Trump asked, “Does anyone really know what Somaliland is?”
He added that any proposal involving a strategic port on the Gulf of Aden “doesn’t matter at this time,” noting that all matters are under review and that he makes decisions based on what he considers right. Trump had previously stated in August that he was considering granting official recognition to the separatist region, but no final decision had been made.
Israeli Channel 14 reported that Israel’s official recognition of Somaliland came within the framework of the Abraham Accords, involving the establishment of full diplomatic relations and strategic cooperation across various sectors. The channel noted that Somaliland would host Gaza residents in exchange for this recognition, in a move described by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office as historic.
