South African Ambassador in Paris Found Dead After Fall from Hotel
French media reported on Tuesday that the South African ambassador in Paris was found dead after falling from the 22nd floor of a hotel.
According to Le Figaro, citing the Paris prosecutor’s office, Emmanuel Mathitha was discovered lifeless on Tuesday morning next to the Hyatt Hotel in the 17th arrondissement.
The newspaper stated: “It is believed that the South African ambassador jumped from the window.”
Similarly, Le Parisien reported that the 58-year-old diplomat is suspected to have leapt from the 22nd floor of the four-star hotel.
The prosecutor’s office confirmed that the ambassador had booked a room on the 22nd floor and that the secure window had been forced open.
His wife reported him missing the previous day, saying she had received a disturbing message from him on Monday evening.
The Paris Police Department’s Brigade for the Repression of Delinquency Against Persons (BRDP) has opened an investigation into the case.
A spokesperson for the Paris police declined to comment to Reuters, while calls to the South African Embassy went unanswered.
