Spain Threatens to Boycott World Cup 2026 if Israel Qualifies

Spain’s ruling Socialist Party has hinted at the possibility of a Boycott World Cup 2026 scenario if Israel qualifies for the tournament, set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Speaking to Spanish media on Tuesday, Pachi López, spokesperson for the Socialist parliamentary bloc, said Israel’s potential participation “could threaten Spain’s involvement,” adding: “We will examine this option at the right time.”

López emphasized that his party is actively pushing for Israel’s exclusion from international sporting competitions over the ongoing Gaza war, suggesting that international federations and governing bodies should take action.

Calls to Exclude Israel From Global Sports

The Socialist Party’s position echoes remarks by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who earlier urged that Israel be barred from competing in global sports events. López added that “the general direction is already clear”, hinting that Spain’s role in the World Cup will depend on the stance taken by international organizations.

Spain’s Potential Boycott World Cup 2026 Stirs Debate

Israel currently sits third in its qualifying group alongside Norway, Italy, Estonia, and Moldova, making its path to the tournament still viable. The mere possibility of Spain withdrawing from the championship if Israel qualifies has sparked heated debate in both political and sports circles.

This is not the first time Spain has threatened such measures. Recently, the government also floated the idea of boycotting the Eurovision Song Contest should Israel be allowed to participate.

International Olympic Committee Responds

On Tuesday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) weighed in on calls to sanction Israeli athletes, reaffirming that both Israeli and Palestinian athletes “are expected to respect the Olympic Charter.”
