Study: Inhaling Candle Smoke Negatively Affects Brain Function

Scented candles are often used to promote relaxation and improve mood, but scientists have a different perspective. A study published in Nature Communications found that candle smoke can negatively impact cognitive abilities and mental skills.

The research indicated that exposure to candle smoke may affect brain function, particularly concentration and attention skills.

In the study, 26 participants were placed in a sealed room with a lit candle for one hour. The experiment was then repeated on a different day in a clean-air environment. Participants underwent cognitive tests before and after each session to measure their ability to focus.

Results showed a noticeable decline in participants’ ability to concentrate on relevant information while ignoring distractions after inhaling candle smoke. Their reaction times also slowed compared to when they were in a clean environment.

Dr. Thomas Faherty, a researcher from the University of Birmingham, explained that the study provides evidence that short-term exposure to air pollution can negatively affect basic cognitive functions. The researchers used candles as an example of indoor pollution sources, emphasizing the importance of ventilating closed spaces to reduce health risks.

The study suggests that cognitive impairment may be linked to inflammation triggered by inhaling pollutants. Additionally, fine particles from burning candles and other pollutants can enter the bloodstream through the lungs, potentially crossing the blood-brain barrier and affecting neural functions.
