UK Urges Focus on National Security and Military Applications of Artificial Intelligence

UK Technology Secretary Peter Kyle has called on The Alan Turing Institute, the United Kingdom’s leading research center for artificial intelligence, to prioritize the development of defense-related applications and military technologies. The request is part of a broader government strategy aimed at strengthening national security through advancements in AI.

According to a report published by The Guardian, Kyle sent an official letter to the institute’s leadership emphasizing that defense and national security projects should become central to the institute’s work in the coming period. He also highlighted the importance of increased collaboration with the UK’s security, defense, and intelligence agencies.

In his letter, the minister stated that The Alan Turing Institute requires substantial structural reforms and a change in leadership to align more closely with the UK’s priorities in technological sovereignty and defense through artificial intelligence.

The institute is currently headed by Doug Gurr, the former UK Country Manager for Amazon. While the institute receives public funding, it is formally recognized as an independent research body.

The institute has been undergoing an internal restructuring process, which has included staff reductions. An internal survey conducted at the end of 2024 revealed that 20% of employees expressed concerns that the ongoing reforms could undermine the institute’s reputation as an independent and leading AI research center.
