Ukraine Peace Talks Gain Momentum With Planned Zelensky-Trump Meeting
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced a significant development in the Ukraine peace talks, revealing an agreement to hold a high-level meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump in the near future, amid intensified diplomatic efforts to end the war that began nearly four years ago.
In a post published on Telegram and X on Friday, Zelensky said:
“We agreed to hold a meeting at the highest level with President Trump in the near future.”
Zelensky explained that the announcement followed a briefing from Rustem Umerov, Ukraine’s chief negotiator in peace talks aimed at ending Russia’s war, who updated him on recent contacts with the U.S. side. Zelensky added:
“Many decisions can be made before the New Year.”
Possible Date and Location of the Zelensky–Trump Meeting
According to diplomatic sources cited by the Kyiv Post, the meeting could take place on December 28, at Trump’s residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, giving new momentum to the Ukraine peace talks at a critical stage of the conflict.
Diplomatic activity has intensified in recent weeks as Trump seeks to bring the war to an end. His negotiating team, which includes special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, has held extensive discussions with Ukrainian negotiators. Zelensky also spoke by phone with Witkoff and Kushner on Thursday.
International Diplomatic Efforts and Ukraine’s Peace Plan
Earlier this month, diplomatic efforts surrounding the Ukraine peace talks shifted to Berlin for two days with European participation, while separate U.S.–Russian contacts took place to involve Moscow in the process.
On Christmas Day, Zelensky revealed a 20-point peace plan that had remained confidential for an extended period. The plan includes security guarantees for Ukraine similar to Article 5 of the NATO treaty, which provides for collective defense.
Despite these initiatives, Moscow’s response has remained lukewarm. The main point of contention continues to be Russia’s demand to annex Donetsk and Luhansk in the Donbas region, areas it does not fully control. Ukrainian forces continue to defend these territories and reject any withdrawal.
Military Developments: Russian Forces Capture New Territory
On the battlefield, Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced on Friday that its forces had captured a new settlement, marking the eighth town seized within a single week.
In a statement, the ministry said that units of the Eastern Group of Forces advanced deeper into Ukrainian defenses and “liberated the settlement of Kosovtsevo in the Zaporizhzhia region.”
The Russian defense ministry also reported carrying out one massive strike and six coordinated group strikes between December 20 and 26, targeting Ukrainian military positions and facilities linked to the military-industrial complex. According to Moscow, the attacks involved advanced weapons, including Kinzhal hypersonic ballistic missiles, and were conducted in response to what it described as Ukrainian attacks on civilian targets inside Russia.

These parallel political and military developments highlight the growing tension between diplomatic initiatives and continued escalation on the ground.
