Had the first half ended with Canada leading, no one would have been surprised, given the performance.
Canada entered the match with courage, pressed from the start, and reached Morocco’s goal on several occasions, while the Atlas Lions appeared far from the form they had shown in the group stage matches and against the Netherlands in the Round of 32.
The Canadian tempo was faster, the movements bolder, while fatigue showed on Morocco’s players, and Ismail Saibari’s injury added to the team’s disarray, making it seem that the match was heading in the direction Canada wanted.
At that stage, Morocco was not controlling the match, but rather trying to keep the score as it was.
Canada came close to scoring several times. Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was the main reason the score remained unchanged.

From that moment, Canada’s confidence dropped, spaces began to appear, and Morocco became more comfortable managing the game.
Canada paid the price for not scoring in the first half, after delivering a strong performance in the first 45 minutes, punished by football for not capitalising on that superiority with a goal.
Canada emerged from the half they had dominated without a goal. And when Morocco regained their balance with Onahi’s goal, Canada could no longer restore the match to its earlier rhythm.
Morocco on the world stage
Great teams do not need many chances. They need to survive until their chance comes. That is what the Atlas Lions did.
Onahi created the turning point in the match, doing two important things: scoring and completely changing the course of the game.
