Pedersen on the Constitutional Declaration Issued by Damascus: The Time Has Come for a Genuine Transitional Government

Geir Pedersen, the United Nations Envoy to Syria, called for the formation of a genuine and credible transitional government that excludes no one, following the constitutional declaration issued by the Syrian government.

Pedersen emphasized the need for this step to contribute to restoring the rule of law and advancing an organized and inclusive transitional process. He also highlighted the positive nature of the recent agreement between Damascus and the Syrian Democratic Forces, considering it an important step toward restoring Syria’s territorial unity and sovereignty.

The constitutional declaration was issued weeks after Ahmed Al-Sharaa was appointed as the transitional president on January 29. It includes key provisions such as naming the state the “Syrian Arab Republic,” adopting Islamic jurisprudence as a primary source of legislation, ensuring freedom of expression and property rights, and dissolving the existing constitutional court for a transitional period of five years.
