The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) Announces a Historic Decision… A Radical Shift Looms in the Turkish-Kurdish Scene

The leadership of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) officially announced its decision to dissolve the party, end the armed struggle, and relinquish weapons, via Turkish and Kurdish media. This decision follows leadership meetings held from May 5 to 7, 2025.

Key Announced Decisions
Among the key decisions announced was the official dissolution of the party, the cessation of the armed struggle, and the termination of all activities carried out under the name of the PKK. The leadership also called for the strengthening of Turkish-Kurdish brotherhood and participation in the new peace phase. It emphasized that the Kurdish people would understand the decision to dissolve and end the fighting more deeply than any other party, considering that the struggle had contributed to bringing the Kurdish cause to a stage that is politically solvable through democratic means.

A Call for Political Struggle
The PKK’s statement noted that these decisions represent a shift towards democratic political struggle, which would positively affect the future of the region’s people on the basis of freedom and equality. The statement also called for the re-establishment and regulation of relations between Turkey and the Kurds within a peaceful and democratic framework, stressing the importance of involving all marginalized groups in building a shared life.

The Role of Parliament
The statement clarified that implementing these decisions requires granting leader Abdullah Öcalan the right to manage and direct the next phase, alongside providing comprehensive legal guarantees. The leadership also emphasized the need for the Turkish Parliament to assume its historical responsibility during this phase to ensure a sustainable peace process.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had stated earlier that “the PKK will be dissolved soon and will give up its weapons,” confirming that all obstacles to this step had been overcome.
