Administration moves forward with official classification
The debate over designating the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization is resurfacing in U.S. politics, as former President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that preparations are underway to issue a formal decision. Trump told Just the News that the move “will be done in the strongest possible terms,” confirming that final documentation is currently being prepared.
Investigation prompts renewed attention
Trump’s remarks followed an investigative report published by Just the News, which highlighted growing concerns within his administration regarding the group’s activities. The investigation played a key role in reigniting calls for designating the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization.
Texas governor takes independent action
Last week, Texas Governor Greg Abbott classified both the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as “foreign terrorist organizations and transnational criminal groups.” Abbott stated that these organizations have long pursued objectives such as “imposing Sharia by force and establishing Islamic dominance globally,” noting that their actions allegedly support terrorism and undermine U.S. law. He also announced that they are now banned from owning property within Texas, and criminal investigations have been launched targeting their activities.
Congress members push for official designation
Several Republican and Democratic lawmakers are urging the U.S. State Department to move forward with designating the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization. In August, Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged the designation was “in progress,” but emphasized the complexity of the process due to the group’s multiple regional branches.
In July, Texas Senator Ted Cruz and other lawmakers introduced a bill to classify the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization, referencing the October 7th attack by Hamas—an alleged affiliate—that resulted in the deaths of at least 53 Americans.
New legislative efforts for 2025
Representatives Mario Diaz-Balart and Jared Moskowitz have reintroduced the “Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act of 2025,” asserting that the group and its affiliates pose a threat to U.S. national security by exploiting Western systems and financial channels to promote violence and instability.
