Washington’s new sanctions harm the interests of its allies

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the new US sanctions against “Northern Stream 2” are illegal and harm the interests of Washington’s allies.
“The Russian position has not changed. Unilateral sanctions against Russia are illegal,” Zakharova added in a press briefing.
“They do not so much harm our interests as they do the interests of the United States itself, but in the case of Nordic Stream 2 – the direct allies of the United States – the European Union and Germany, collectively and individually,” she continued.
US sanctions against Cyprus-based Transadria and the Russian-flagged ship “Marlin” associated with “Northern Stream 2” went into effect on Tuesday. Subsequently, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said that the United States would continue to implement sanctions against the project. In response to the US measures, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the US-led West is applying sanctions with or without reason, describing the sanctions on the gas pipeline as a “blatant example of unfair competition.”
The “Northern Stream 2” project involves the construction of a gas pipeline with a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters per year from the Russian coast across the Baltic Sea to Germany. The project is met with active opposition from the United States, which is promoting its liquefied natural gas to the European Union, as well as Ukraine, which fears losing transit. The United States imposed sanctions on “Northern Stream 2” in December and demanded the companies immediately stop laying the pipeline. Russia has repeatedly called to stop mentioning “Northern Stream 2” in the context of any politicization, as it is a beneficial business project for both Russia and the European Union.
