Western Sahara: UAE Commends Washington’s Role, Qatar Welcomes UN Decision
The United Arab Emirates welcomed the UN Security Council’s decision supporting Morocco’s initiative to grant Western Sahara autonomy under its sovereignty.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that the resolution is an important step toward a final and sustainable political solution, praising the diplomatic efforts made by the United States in facilitating the adoption of the decision, and reiterated its full support for the Kingdom of Morocco in safeguarding its sovereignty, stability, and territorial integrity.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim, former Prime Minister of Qatar, described the decision as a model to follow, commending the wisdom of the Moroccan monarch and his administration in reaching this solution. Bin Jassim called on Arab states to enhance solidarity and bridge differences between Morocco and Algeria, considering this resolution an opportunity to overcome accumulated disputes in favor of both peoples.
The UN Security Council had announced that Western Sahara would receive autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty, calling on the relevant parties to engage in negotiations according to Morocco’s 2007 autonomy plan. Eleven members voted in favor of the resolution, while Russia, China, and Pakistan abstained from voting, and Algeria did not participate. The Council also renewed the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force in the region for one year.
