In a country worn down by crises, from war to inflation, an old proverb resurfaces every day: “Torn down walls make theft easier.”
In the current Syrian reality, “walls” are not just made of stone, but symbolize the state, law, trust, and belonging.
The void in public institutions, which have lost their role, combined with the collapse of the economic system and the absence of social justice, has turned the country into an open field for those who know where to take advantage.
With the absence of “walls” that form lines of defense, the bread of Syrians becomes vulnerable to plunder, government decisions are tied to deals, the weak are exposed to the strong, and they become subject to their greed.
The Fundamental Theft:
It no longer happens in the dark, but in broad daylight. As the gap between wages and the cost of living widens, the opportunities for looting and corruption increase, not only by officials or traders but even by close neighbors. In the absence of real accountability, the idea that “if you don’t steal, you’ll be stolen from” will become entrenched.
But can the walls be repaired?
The thinker responds practically, saying: “Whenever I remember that the solution lies in national unity, I feel uneasy.” He is right, given that time is running out.
Theoretically, the only solution for building or repairing the walls is when the state begins to regenerate a unified national market, ensure the minimum level of justice, and when laws are respected and freedoms protected. This happens when the citizen feels that there is a home with walls that both protect and regulate him at the same time.
In conclusion, only a home with walls and a heart that beats with justice can stop the thief.
